N: Mom, two police officers were outside our school today, you want to know why?
Me: (No, i already know.) Why?
N: There was this guy? At another school? And he came in with a gun.
Me: I did hear about that. Who told you about it?
N: But he didn’t shoot anybody, though.
Me: No, he didn’t. But he was going to. That was his plan, to shoot people.
N: Like who?
Me: Well, I think he planned to shoot anyone he saw.
N: That would be a lot of people.
Me: It would. It would have been a lot of people.
N: Mom, do I know anyone who goes to that school?
Me: I don’t know. I don’t think so, but it’s not very far from us, maybe three miles. It’s a school just like your school. Kids just like the kids at your school.
N: Who was the guy?
Me: I don’t know. I haven’t heard his name. I’m not sure who he was.
N: Why would he want to shoot kids in a school?
Me: … I don’t know, bud. Some people’s minds don’t work the right way—something in their body sends bad messages to their heads and they do things they shouldn’t do. But there are a lot of people who want to change the laws in this country so that people who have those thoughts can’t get a gun and hurt other people. It’s a really important thing, and even the President is trying to make things different so no one gets hurt any more.
N: Mom, I just thought of something. What if we didn’t even have guns? Well, except for like, the Olympics or sports kind of things. But what if nobody even had them anywhere? That would be so relaxing, wouldn’t it? I bet that would be so much better.
Me: It sure does sound pretty great to me, bud. In fact, it sounds downright heavenly.
