Right now, in this new place

Out the kitchen window there is only the sound and sight of trees, even though the house is close enough to the city to walk downtown on four-year old legs.  The impending storm whips the branches back and forth until the drops finally start to fall fat and splashing on the leaves and spill over to stain the deck an even darker brown.  Inside, the tile is cool on my feet and the baby monitor hums in my ear, its usefulness finally realized after years of merely echoing cries from cribs just one wall away.  The monitor reports only silence from the room where a boy and a girl lie sleeping in parallel beds, freshly bathed and dreaming. Farther from the kitchen still sits a man studying law, head bent over hardbacked books with small print, pages already awash in neon greens and yellows.  And I will soon turn out this light and ready myself for bed, the sound of the rain steady on the roof that keeps us all dry.
