Houston, all systems are go

This morning we had our normal lazy wake up routine of breakfast with Daddy/come wake up Mama/say good morning to the baby/read books in bed for 20 minutes, and I don’t ever know when this is going to happen or where it comes from, but Bug was in his Super-Sweet-Kid-You-Want-To-Squish-All-Over mode. He lingered over his “baby time” kissing my belly and saying, “Good morning baby! Good morning!” and then “I’m your big brother baby. I’m right here! Baby, I’m right here.” Geez, I’m already all verklempt with these extra hormones. What is he trying to DO to me?

Then we got ready for the day and went to my 12 week appointment. Heartbeat: audible and strong. Weight gain: thankfully, unbelievably, minimal. Blood pressure: good. Blood work: great, although she said I had low iron. When I asked how I could help raise it she said red meat was a great source, which of course translated in my head as “The midwife has ordered me to eat a hamburger at Wendy’s every day for a month. I MUST OBEY.” Then she said some weird words like “kale” and “Swiss chard” as being good sources also, but she obviously made those words up. Hamburgers it is!

I told her that I was kind of amazed that I was still pregnant, since I haven’t been actively WILLING THE BABY TO GROW WITH MY MIND every second of the day. I’m pretty sure this is how Bug made it through ok. My Jedi mind tricks.

But no, I forget for whole big chunks of days that I am in the Family Way and yet that baby grows and grows and grows even so.

After hearing the heartbeat, I went and bought some maternity tops at a consignment store, I guess because it seems just that much more real. As we were checking out, Bug reached up to the counter to snag a peppermint from a dish they had sitting out and the lady at the register said “Hey little man, you shoppin’ with your Mama today?” Bug poked his head up over the counter and said, “We heard our baby’s heartbeat today at my Mommy’s doctor!” just as pleased as punch. And then he added, “It sounded like a RACE CAR!!”

“Well isn’t that nice,” she said, smiling at me. “It sure was,” I nodded.

It sure was.
